Caoimhin Kelleher: Liverpool goalkeeper stands out by denying Kylian Mbappe a penalty

Alisson, considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world, suffered a hamstring injury in Liverpool’s win against Crystal Palace on October 5 and has not played since.

The 32-year-old has played 271 times – winning the Champions League and Premier League – since his £66.8million move from Roma in 2018.

The Brazilian was expected to have recovered by now, but he only appears to be back in individual training rather than team training.

Therefore, Kelleher should play again against title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

But Liverpool coach Arne Slot has already made it clear that “as soon as Alisson is fit, he will be our first goalkeeper.”

After the game against Real Madrid, Slot said: “Kelleher was outstanding. He did remarkable things for us,” adding: “Just like our other goalkeeper, who also did remarkable things.”

Kelleher kept five clean sheets in ten games for Liverpool this season and conceded just seven goals.

Former England defender Gary Cahill, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, said: “The old saying goes, ‘When you have a chance you have to take it’ and Caoimhin Kelleher certainly did that.”

“Liverpool have a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson who will probably come back but it is a big headache for the coach.”
