Eddie Howe is hoping for another start in the Carabao Cup

This is the second time Newcastle have secured a place in the Carabao Cup final four under Howe, having reached the 2022/23 final but losing to Manchester United.

The home-and-away semi-finals are scheduled to be played in January and February next year and the Newcastle boss believes the cup can be something the team can “look forward to” in the middle of their league season.

Howe said: “I think it’s a really good thing for us at the moment because it’s on the horizon.

“There remains a positive feeling that we can look forward to, although we know we have to work in the Premier League to get our position to where we want it to be.”

“I think if you look at our best performance, there is no reason why we can’t improve our position and be really competitive in the semi-finals.”

“I had pressure on my shoulders”: Gabriel Jesus with a hat trick

Gabriel Jesus admitted he was under pressure to perform for Arsenal before scoring a stunning goal to seal their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Before Wednesday’s round of 16 against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium, Jesus had scored just once this season – in the preliminary round against Preston – and just twice in 2024.

But Jesus turned back the years and scored a 27-minute second-half hat-trick as Arsenal staged a fightback to see off Palace and secure a place in the last four.

It was the first time in 20 months that Jesus scored more than one goal in a game and it was also his first hat-trick in an Arsenal shirt following his move from Manchester City in the summer of 2022.

Manager Mikel Arteta claimed afterwards that Jesus is now “back to his best” and hopes this is a turning point in his career – a week after the Brazilian missed a number of good chances in Arsenal’s Champions League win over Monaco.

Federico Chiesa needs time to get back to his best, says Arne Slot

Liverpool coach Arne Slot admits it will likely take time for summer signing Federico Chiesa to return to top form following his long-awaited return from injury.

Italian striker Chiesa played the second half of Wednesday night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final win at Southampton after being sidelined for almost three months.

The 27-year-old has been limited to just four appearances since his move to Anfield from Juventus, which could ultimately be worth £12.5 million.

Slot felt Chiesa gave encouraging signals at St Mary’s as he challenged the player to provide competition to Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Eddie Howe praises Sandro Tonali’s impact

Eddie Howe praised “two great finishes” from Sandro Tonali as Newcastle reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Looking back on the win over Brentford, Howe said: “I think it was a good performance, a tough game. I think the goals were extremely important. Sandro’s first punch is an incredible punch and the second is very difficult to do what he did at that moment.

“Two great goals from him and I think those early goals really helped us. There could have been more in the second half, but we are happy that we progressed.”

“I think it’s great to see it from my perspective. He’s a big signing and you want your big signings to do well and establish themselves quickly,” Howe added.

“He’s been here for a while but has had very little football. Evenings like this evening will strengthen the bond with him and the fans. I’m just really happy for him on a personal level.”

Arsenal are delighted that Gabriel Jesus is “back to his best”.

Mikel Arteta said Gabriel Jesus is “back to his best” after the Brazilian’s brilliant second-half hat-trick sent Arsenal into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Jesus went into the last eight this year with just two goals, prompting Arteta to insist he would not be sold when the transfer window opens next month.

And Jesus rewarded his manager’s faith with three goals that could breathe new life into not just his sputtering career but Arsenal’s season.

“I’m so happy for him,” said Arteta. “It’s been a long time without goals and today, with three goals, the three types of goals he scored – and the many actions he was involved in – he looked very sharp.

“It’s a great thing for him and the team that we can rely on a player of this quality. Gabi is a big asset for us at this level. It’s a big message for the team that we have Gabi back in top form. Now it’s about consistency.

“That spark will give him so much confidence. Now we have to take advantage of the situation and give him more games and chances. When a player finds himself in that moment, it’s important that he keeps going.”
