Cardinals fans condemn referee for penalty against Vikings: “Stolen the game”

The Arizona Cardinals were penalized 10 times for 96 yards on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

But according to many fans, a single call cost them the game in a 23-22 loss in Week 13 at US Bank Stadium.

The call? A false start penalty against Tip Reiman on first-and-goal at the Minnesota 5-yard line with 4:14 to play.

Replays showed the decision should have been a Minnesota defensive tackle that would have put Arizona first and 2 1/2 yards away from a touchdown.

Arizona was forced back to first base and goal by the penalty at the 10, and then Kyler Murray was called for an intentional grounding, pushing the Cardinals further behind.

Arizona later settled for a field goal after a fourth-and-goal from the Minnesota 4, extending the lead to 22-16. Minnesota scored the game-winning touchdown on its next drive.

What Jonathan Gannon said about penalties against the Vikings

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon chose not to focus on the failed statement in his postgame media release, instead placing the blame on all of his team’s mistakes.

“This is a low-flag (referee) crew,” Gannon told reporters. “So if we have almost 100 yards in the penalty kill, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.”

However, Cardinals fans weren’t shy about directing their ire on social media after the game at the referee who awarded the costly penalty, commenting on the “game-changing call.”

If Arizona had scored a touchdown in this situation, the Cardinals would have been ahead 26-16 late in the fourth quarter.
