Cardinals’ James Conner on the only bright spot against Carolina

Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner continued to be the most consistent part of the offense early against the Carolina Panthers.

His second straight 1,000-yard season, which he reached in the first quarter of Sunday’s game, says everything you need to know.

With this performance, Conner is now tied with former running back Edgerrin James for the most 1,000-yard season in franchise history. Both Conner and James are three behind Ottis Anderson’s mark of five.

To jump-start the offense, the veteran hit 1K behind on a 40-yard run that turned the field for Arizona’s offense.

And it’s good that he did it.

Despite the running back’s large lead, Arizona had to settle for a 48-yard field goal from Chad Ryland as errors continued to pile up.

Aside from Conner’s early efforts with six carries for 59 yards and a touchdown, Arizona looked unhappy on both sides of the football.

Similar to what was recorded during Arizona’s three-game losing streak, the offense continues to shoot itself in the foot with penalties.

In just over a quarter of the game, Arizona had a total of eight penalties. As head coach Jonathan Gannon would say, that’s non-winning behavior.

The connection between quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. also faces more misunderstandings. It didn’t help that the rookie was hit for offsides on the first play from scrimmage.

Michael Carter’s fumble in the second quarter only made the injury worse.

Defensively, Arizona had little answer for Carolina quarterback Bryce Young and Co., who opened with a 15-yard, 70-yard scoring drive that lasted nearly eight minutes.

Carolina turned around and repeated it on the game’s next two drives, with Young scoring and throwing another shot.

Carolina leads Arizona 20-10 in the second quarter.
