CLEVELAND – When the Cavaliers won their first 15 games this season, they settled into a positive streak, but had to fight to stop the proverbial bleeding Sunday night after suffering two straight losses to the Atlanta Hawks.

Well, the Cavs have stepped up amid adversity. With a 115:111 victory over their main playoff opponent, the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics, they prevented a three-game losing streak. Last season, the Celtics eliminated the Cavs from the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 4-1 series win in May. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, the Cavs lost 120-117 in Boston, ending their 15-game winning streak.

With the Celtics trailing 113-110, Cavs forward Evan Mobley fouled point guard Payton Pritchard, sending him to the free throw line. Pritchard took the first foul shot to cut Cleveland’s lead to 113-111 with five seconds left and intentionally missed the second. But Pritchard crossed the free throw line too early and committed a lane violation.

Mobley threw an inbounds pass to Mitchell. After receiving a foul, Mitchell made two foul throws to give the Cavs a 115-111 cushion with 4.3 seconds left. The Cavs won by the same score.

Mitchell scored 20 of his game-high 35 points in the fourth quarter. Small forward Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 33 points.

The game later developed into a free throw shooting competition.

Mitchell and Cavs point guard Darius Garland combined for eight foul shots in the final 21.8 seconds. Forward Georges Niang caught a lobbed inbounds pass from forward Evan Mobley, picked up a foul and then made two free throws to give the Cavs a 113-110 lead with 5.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Five-time All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell fired up the Cavs in the fourth quarter, tying the score at 101-101 by hitting a three-pointer with 1:40 left.

After Celtics star small forward Jayson Tatum missed consecutive shots, including a layup, Mitchell found small forward Isaac Okoro at the basket and Okoro assisted on a dunk by forward Evan Mobley, giving the Cavs the lead with 34 seconds left gave a lead of 105-101.

Tatum got the better of Darius Garland and managed to break him up with a little physicality, leading to an easy bounce.

Tatum has the ability to take over games, and he’s on track to do that tonight without Jaylen Brown or Derrick White on the field.

The Cavs built a 28-24 lead over the Celtics in one quarter.

Point guard Darius Garland led the Cavs with six points in the first quarter. Center Kristaps Porzingis led the Celtics with nine points in the first quarter.

The Cavs made 11 of 25 shots (44.4%) from the field (5 of 12 on 3-pointers) in the first quarter. The Celtics made 9 of 25 shots (36%) from the floor (4 of 14 on threes).

Cavs point guard Darius Garland lost his defensive position to the Celtics’ Payton Pritchard and Boston took its first lead of the game. Impressive ballhandling allowed Pritchard to create separation and hit a stepback 3-pointer to give the Celtics a one-point lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

However, Garland set up a three-pointer from forward Georges Niang and the Cavs took a 24-22 lead with three minutes left.

The Cavs began the game with an 8-0 lead over the Celtics, with center Jarrett Allen scoring half of those points.

The Celtics countered when Porzingis and small forward Jayson Tatum made 3-pointers, cutting the Cavs’ lead to 8-6.

A three-point play by Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell extended Cleveland’s lead to 11-6, but forward Al Horford drained a 3-pointer in response, increasing the lead to 11-9 in Cleveland’s favor.
