Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was fined $35,000 by the NBA for conduct toward referees after the loss to the Bulls

Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was fined $35,000 by the NBA on Saturday for his conduct toward officials during Thursday’s 117-108 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

The league said the penalty was due to “aggressive pursuit and inappropriate language toward a game official.”

Mazzulla was initially whistled for a technical foul for leaving the coach’s box on the sideline and entering the field in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum were also assessed technical fouls before Mazzula’s violation.

After the final buzzer, Mazzulla pursued referee Justin Van Duyne to address the calls. The Celtics coach responded cheekily when asked what he said to the officials.

“I just hadn’t seen her in a while, so Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, I wasn’t sure if I was going to see her before the holidays,” Mazzulla said during his postgame press conference. “I just can’t let a moment go by when you wish the best for someone and their families.”

This likely helped Mazzulla avoid a larger fine, like the one Houston Rockets coach Ime Udoka received earlier this month for stalking officials on the field and then criticizing them in postgame remarks.

After the game, team manager Tony Brothers told reporters that Brown had received a technical for questioning the integrity of a referee, according to the Associated Press. Tatum received his technical justification for “an overt action toward an officer.”

Brown responded that he was given a technical notice without explanation.

“As captain… I speak for my team. I’m allowed to talk,” Brown said. “So if I tell you, ‘You called a technician for no reason,’ and he says, ‘If you say that again, I’ll call it a technician,’ then you’re just using your whistle as a threat.” That’s not part of it game.”

Brown was fined $25,000 two weeks ago for making a head-slashing gesture at Isaiah Stewart of the Detroit Pistons during the Dec. 6 match.

The Celtics play the Bulls again on Saturday, this time in Chicago.
