Celtics injury report: Jayson Tatum, 2 starters listed for 76ers game

The Celtics will be on the big stage, the NBA’s annual Christmas list, but they could be shorthanded for their game against the 76ers. A total of three starters are considered questionable for Wednesday’s game at 5 p.m. at TD Garden.

The big name to keep an eye on is of course Jayson Tatum, as he has a non-COVID condition listed. Jrue Holiday (right shoulder impingement) and Derrick White (right hamstring strain) are also listed on the injury report.

Tatum missed the Celtics’ loss to the Magic as he was unexpectedly demoted shortly before the game began. C’s coach Joe Mazzulla explained the star’s unexpected absence as Boston lost 108-104 to an undermanned Magic team.

Considering how much Tatum loves to play and the fact that it’s Christmas, he’ll definitely try to get in shape for the game. But it is unclear at this point whether he is healthy enough to do so given his illness.

When the NBA announced its five preseason Christmas games, it was assumed that the Sixers would pose a threat to the Celtics. But Philadelphia has struggled with injuries this season and entered Wednesday’s game with a 10-17 record and out of the play-in picture, let alone playoff positioning. They’ve lost 7-3 in their last 10 games, so they’ve been playing better, but there’s still a lot of work to do given their 3-14 record to start the year.

The Sixers were expected to make a splash after acquiring Paul George in the offseason. But injuries and absences have again caused problems for the organization, which has been a constant in recent years.

Former MVP Joel Embiid has played in just eight games this season after playing in 39 games last year. George also only played 17 of 27 games. Jared McCain, the favorite to win first rookie of the year, also suffered a torn meniscus and is out indefinitely due to another unfortunate setback.
