Central Pennsylvania will see a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain this weekend

According to the National Weather Service, central Pennsylvania will be cooled by a brief cold snap followed by a wintry mix.

Sunny skies will push temperatures above 30C on Friday afternoon, according to meteorologist David Martin. But the temperature will drop to as low as 14 degrees this evening, he said.

Freezing temperatures will continue Saturday morning, Martin said, but skies will be sunny again. The maximum temperature on Saturday is expected to be around 32°C.

At the end of the weekend comes the wintry mix.

Sunday will start out cloudy with temperatures in the low to mid 20s, he said – and then precipitation will arrive in the Harrisburg area. There will be a “mixture of light rain and snow, freezing rain and even some sleet,” Martin said.

He said it would rain and snow until 4 p.m., with temperatures around 34 degrees. The wintry mix will transition to mostly rain throughout Sunday evening. Meteorologists are predicting less than half an inch of snow accumulation.

Martin said residents traveling this weekend should pay attention to road conditions.

Next week, the rain will continue through Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures in the high 40s, he said.

Although the Weather Service meteorologist predicts there will be “another shot of Arctic air” toward central Pennsylvania later next week, he said it could take weeks for temperatures to drop again.

Here is the forecast for the next few days:

  • Tonight: Partly sunny, high 36, low 14.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high 36, low 26
  • Sunday: It’s likely to snow before 4 p.m., then it could rain and snow. High 39, low 35
  • Monday: Rain, high 44, low 41.
  • Tuesday: Chance of showers, high 56, low 33
