CFP Predictions: Miami falls, Ohio State still alive as playoff race heats up

The final weekend of college football’s regular season has ended and there are only two weeks of CFP rankings remaining until we find out who makes the playoffs. Luckily for us, we experienced another day of chaos surrounding sports, affecting numerous teams when it came to playing for a conference championship.

You didn’t think we’d get through Rivalry Weekend without some sort of chaos, did you? Friday night’s eight-overtime thriller between Georgia and Georgia Tech proved to be just a taste of what was to come on Saturday.

As we all saw, Michigan defeated Ohio State in “The Game,” eliminating the Buckeyes from the Big Ten Championship. Penn State slides into the title game thanks to the Wolverines. And as if the game wasn’t enough, the post-game scuffle, which began because Michigan players planted their flag at midfield, resulted in utter chaos, with police officers using pepper spray to defuse the situation.

But we weren’t done with the CFP madness yet. All Miami had to do was beat Syracuse and they would be playing for an ACC title this weekend. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, a 21-0 first half lead wasn’t enough as the ‘Cuse staged a magical comeback to defeat Miami, allowing Clemson to advance to the same day the Tigers lost to Conference championship sneak to South Carolina.

In the SEC, the renewal of Texas vs. Texas A&M proved to be a dud early in the game, as the Longhorns beat the Aggies to clinch a spot in the conference title game against Georgia this weekend. Now several teams in the SEC are waiting to see if they can join Tennessee, Texas and Georgia in the postseason if the CFP committee decides a fourth team is worthy.

In the Big 12 this weekend, Iowa State and Arizona State will battle for the automatic bid. As for the conference title winner’s other overall spot, Boise State and UNLV will play in the Mountain West championship game for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Okay, let’s take a look at our expert pickers as they compiled the 12 best teams in college football this week.

OutKicks College Football Playoff Top 12 Rankings Week 13

As we head into the championship game on Saturday, some of these conference title games will obviously have a significant impact on the seedings. One of the biggest arguments in this week’s poll was where Tennessee and Ohio State should be ranked.

Even though Miami is ranked 11th this week, the question is whether the Hurricanes can stop a three-loss SEC team in the CFP rankings. I’m excited to see where the committee places the Canes this week, along with Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Voters are arguing what the College Football Playoff would look like now

Ahead of the final weekend, several teams are still hoping a spot will open up. The dispute centers on the SEC putting a fourth school in the playoffs, which would mean a three-loss team moving in against someone like Miami.

Additionally, the seedings will of course be important over the next two weeks as they determine which teams will host a first round game. As you can see, there is a lot of discussion this week about who will be number 4. If Boise State wins the MWC, will that give them an automatic bye against a Big 12 school?

It’s going to be an exciting week for a number of teams as we prepare to be crowned college football conference champions and for some a playoff spot is on the line.
