Chappell Roan had a serious wardrobe malfunction shortly before her appearance on “SNL.”

There was almost a major “hack” during Chappell Roan’s appearance as musical guest. Saturday Night Live in November.

In an interview with Canadian celebrity journalist Nardwuar posted on his YouTube channel on December 15, Roan, 26, revealed that her appearance on the late-night sketch show was shortly before her appearance by a major Wardrobe malfunction was almost doomed to failure.

“Right before I got on stage, it ripped all the way down my back,” the “Hot to Go” singer Nardwuar said of the dress she wore to perform her hit “Pink Pony Club.” “I had to have that SNL‘s in-house seamstress… I was sewn into the dress because it was completely torn.”

Afterwards, Nardwuar also asked Roan about her wardrobe maintenance routine: “And when you wear the dress, do you sometimes get a little sweat? Do you have to clean it or how does it work?”

“You smell crazy, yeah. “I don’t know if I clean it, I think I just put it in a bag and put it back on the rack,” Roan replied.

The dress, a sparkling bodycon floor-length gown with white jewels, was accompanied by Roan’s signature big red curls and drag makeup. The singer wore a voluminous red wig with silver highlights and bold, dark eye makeup as she began the song while sitting on a throne-like chair. On her lapel she wore a large jeweled spider brooch and on her wrist she wore a jeweled spider bracelet. Both were a subtle nod to Halloween, which took place just days before their performance.

For her second performance of the night, Roan introduced a new country track, “The Giver.” For the debut of her new song, the singer wore a pink and white gingham bralette with lapels and a tie, along with matching shorts and cowboy boots. Her band and backing singers sported a similar country look.

In the interview, Nardwuar also asked Roan if she has ever reused any of her outfits, to which Roan replied, “I would love to, but my stylist says we have to move on.”

Roan has been praised in the past for her bold stylistic looks, drawing inspiration from drag queens, theater, horror films and more. In June, Roan stepped out to perform at the New York music festival Governors Ball, painted all green like the Statue of Liberty.

Another look she wore in a promotion for them SNL Appearance, a blue and green burlesque look made by Project career alum Gunnar Deatherage attracted attention with its elaborate construction.

Following the episode, Deatherage took to TikTok and Instagram to explain his process, revealing that the dramatic look (which included dragonfly wings hanging from her hips and an equally wide headdress) was inspired by burlesque dancers from the 20th century.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Deatherage described how he put together the extravagant costume for one of music’s biggest pop stars.

“Honestly, it was such a gift to create such cool, complex things and then have them shown to so many people,” Deatherage told PEOPLE about creating Roan’s look.

The burlesque-inspired outfit Roan wore in the promo was originally planned for a performance at a music festival. However, Deatherage admitted that the plan for the outfit evolved over time.

“As we continued to build and the look continued to evolve and become cooler and more complex, it became clear that this look needed to be seen in a stationary moment rather than jumping around on stage,” says Deatherage. “Because the last thing we wanted to do was stop Chappell from being Chappell on stage – stop the magic.”
