Chappell Roan delivered an outstanding performance Saturday Night Live However, when she appeared as a musical guest in November, the live show was seconds away from a fashion disaster, according to the pop star.

When Roan spoke with Nardwuar for a Lifetime interview released on Monday (December 16), he opened up about the major wardrobe malfunction that happened just before she took the stage at 30 Rock to sing “Pink Pony Club.” She wore a custom-made floor-length gown with white jewels. The look – which she accessorized with her signature drag glamor and fake hips – looked flawless on screen, but that was only due to quick thinking on her part SNL Customers, says Roan.

“It tore all the way down my back right before I took the stage,” the “Hot to Go” singer told Nardwuar, pointing to her neck and lower back to show how long the tear stretched. “I had to have that SNL‘s in-house seamstress… I was sewn into the dress because it was completely torn.”

Roan also performed her unreleased song “The Giver” on the episode hosted by John Mulaney. The country track is expected to appear on the VMA winner’s highly anticipated sophomore album, which follows her Billboard 200 No. 2 breakout LP The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess.

While speaking with Nardwuar, Roan also discussed her recent Grammy nominations, growing up in Missouri, giving a guest lecture on queer identity to Harvard medical students, and finding inspiration for working with drag queens on tour from Orville Peck. Plus the “Good luck, baby!” In-depth meeting with the hitmaker billboardTyler, the Creator’s latest cover star at this year’s Austin City Limits, where both artists performed in October.

“He’s great,” she said of the “Sticky” rapper. “He hid in the shadows as I left the stage. He was just lurking in the corner and my tour manager was like, “Hey, Tyler wants to meet you.” He gave me a lot of good advice about paparazzi – I don’t have paparazzi, but if I did, I took notes. And he thanked me for talking about some of the things I talked about.”
