Chargers sign former first-round pick due to secondary injuries

LA Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz hasn’t fallen asleep at the wheel this season. Hortiz has been extremely active in transporting parts to and from Los Angeles and the results speak for themselves.

Hortiz has been an expert at adding impactful pieces to the edges of the roster this season. Whether it’s acquiring Teair Tart before the season to become an impact player or bringing in veteran Marcus Maye to throw a huge interception against the Atlanta Falcons, the Chargers have it in this one Season managed to attract talent.

Los Angeles may be hoping its latest addition can be another example of that success. With the team dealing with multiple injuries in the secondary, Los Angeles signed former first-round pick Terrell Edmunds to the practice squad on Thursday.

The Chargers signed Terrell Edmunds to the practice squad

Edmunds is the epitome of a late-season signing, as the Chargers signed him three days before the team’s final game of the regular season. It’s unlikely Edmunds will play on such short notice in Week 18, but if the Chargers have nothing to play on Saturday, the team could take him off the practice squad to keep the starters fresh.

The Chargers lost impactful safety Elijah Molden to a fibula injury that put him on IR before the end of the season. Alohi Gilman is expected to return in Week 18 to help mitigate this loss, but the Chargers are still thin at the safety position.

With Derwin James playing in nickel, the Chargers are turning to veteran Tony Jefferson to get a majority of the safety snaps alongside Gilman. Jefferson has been serviceable this season, but it’s not hard to see why the Chargers would want to add depth.

The likelihood of Edmunds having much influence is slim. But the Chargers still got him for a reason, and at least the team knows it has someone with pedigree to turn to if someone gets hurt before the NFL playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Edmunds 28th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Edmunds spent five seasons in Pittsburgh as a serviceable starter before signing a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia then traded Edmunds as part of the Kevin Byard trade. From then on, Edmunds bounced between the Tennessee Titans, the Jacksonville Jaguars and back to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The former Virginia Tech safety has played in six games this season without starting on defense. He has played a total of 69 defensive snaps and 82 special teams snaps this season.
