Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director and producer Charles Shyer, whose films include Private Benjamin, Baby Boom and the 1991 remake Father of the bride and its 1995 sequel died Friday. A cause of death was not given. He was 83.

The Meyers-Shyer family shared this statement with Deadline: “It is with indescribably heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved father, Charles Shyer. His loss leaves an unfillable void in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he lived and know that there will never be another life quite like him.”

Shyer’s Oscar nomination and a WGA Award win went to the original screenplay of the 1980s comedy hit Private Benjamin starring Goldie Hawn, which he co-wrote with Nancy Meyers and Harvey Miller. He worked with Meyers on his next projects, not only professionally but also personally, when they married in 1990 and co-authored Irreconcilable differences with Ryan O’Neal, Shelley Long and Drew Barrymore; Baby boom with Diane Keaton; Father of the Bride I And II with Steve Martin and Keaton; and 1994s I love anger with Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts.

All of the latter films were directed by Shyer, as the pair became one of the industry’s most prolific comedy teams until their divorce in 1999, shortly after she wrote and produced the 1998 Disney remake The parent trap In it, the young Lindsay Lohan played the role of twins who try to bring their parents back together. Meyers took over the direction.

After her divorce in 1999, Shyer struck out on her own and directed and produced the 2001 period piece The affair with the necklace with Hilary Swank and the 2004 remake Alfie starring Jude Law in the title role of the film, written, directed and produced by Shyer. His recent work includes writing and directing the 2022 Netflix film The Noel diary and serves as co-writer and producer of the 2023 Christmas film Best Christmas ever!

Previous works include works from 1977 Smokey and the Bandit, 1978s Home visits (which earned him a WGA nomination for Best Original Screenplay) and Go south, which starred Jack Nicholson. He also shared the story about the 1984 Hawn vehicle with Meyers and Miller Protocol, whose screenplay was credited to Buck Henry.

A Los Angeles native, Shyer was practically born into the business, the son of Lois Delaney and Melville Shyer, a production executive and film director who worked with DW Griffith and was a founder of the Directors Guild of America. After attending UCLA, Shyer gained a DGA education, but soon switched to writing after becoming an assistant to Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson, who produced the TV series The strange couple, He later became head writer and associate producer.

Among the survivors are four children, including filmmaker Hallie Meyers-Shyer.
