Chelsea 2-2 AFC Bournemouth, Premier League: post-match reactions, reviews

Chelsea came out of the blocks with a lot of energy and determination and could have taken the lead in the first minute.

It didn’t quite work out, but we didn’t have to wait too long for the opening goal as Nicolas Jackson released Cole Palmer, who deflected the goalkeeper out of his boots and finished wonderfully.

The goal didn’t change the flow of the game and Chelsea continued to dominate the action, creating chance after chance…but failing to capitalize on bad luck, great saves and a few poor finishes. Bournemouth hit the post thanks to poor defensive display, reminding us how fragile that one-goal lead was.

And unfortunately that fragility and wastefulness came back to haunt us in the second half when Bournemouth equalized from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

Chelsea had plenty of time to react and the visitors should have gone down to 10 men when David Brooks dragged Marc Cucurella to the ground by his hair. It is unimaginable that the referee only gave the yellow card after checking the pitch. (Is this even within the rules?)

And then Bournemouth made fun of everything xG even further with Semenyo firing an unstoppable left-footed shot from a fairly safe angle to give the visitors the lead.

We still had 20 minutes to play but the effortless quality we had shown in the first half had long since been forgotten by this point.

And then, just when it looked like we were going to suffer another home defeat, captain Reece James saved at least a point with a lovely free-kick in stoppage time!

Carefree.

  • As expected, Josh Acheampong started at centre-back.
  • Caicedo with another try at right-back, with the team shape changing to a World Cup formation in possession. This experiment ended after Bournemouth equalized.
  • Once again you have to pay for not scoring the “all-important second goal”.
  • Another collapse in the second half, greater reluctance to use substitutes
  • Now there are five wins in the league and even more points have been lost at home
