Chelsea 5-0 Morecambe (January 11, 2025) Match analysis

Chelsea booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday as braces from Tosin Adarabioyo and João Félix and a single goal from Christopher Nkunku helped them edge past second division side Morecambe with a 5-0 win at Stamford Bridge .

The home side were on the rise throughout and could have won even more clearly had Nkunku not missed a penalty in the 17th minute.

Head coach Enzo Maresca made several changes to his team, with Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernández and Nicolas Jackson all on the bench.

The Italian left 18-year-old attacker Tyrique George a place in his starting XI, while Reece James and Romeo Lavia started for the first time since recovering from their respective injury problems.

Chelsea were in front from the start and almost took the lead when Adarabioyo headed Pedro Neto’s cross onto the crossbar in the 14th minute.

The home side were thwarted again three minutes later when Nkuku saw his penalty – awarded by Morecambe midfielder Yann Songo’o for a handball – saved by Harry Burgoyne.

Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo scored a brace as the west London club beat Morecambe in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

But Burgoyne’s save proved to be a temporary relief for the fourth division club as former Fulham player Adarabioyo saw a shot from the edge of the penalty area deflect into the bottom corner.

After making a substitution at half-time with Marc Cucurella replacing Lavia, Chelsea were quick to defend at the start of the second half. Nkuku made up for his earlier missed penalty five minutes after the break with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of Burgoyne’s goal.

Adarabioyo scored his second goal of the game when he fired a beautiful shot into the top right corner after being found in open space by George on the edge of the penalty area.

The Chelsea defender’s second goal broke Morecambe’s earlier resolve and the home side scored two more goals within the next seven minutes.

First, João Félix rounded off a quick counter-attack with a deft finish into the bottom corner, before the Portugal international doubled his tally with a curling shot beyond Burgoyne’s desperate reach.

Chelsea will find out their fourth-round opponents when the draw takes place around 5:00 p.m. GMT (12:00 p.m. ET) on Sunday.
