Chelsea: The double disasi problem

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has done an excellent job since joining the club in the summer, but one ongoing trend is fan frustration.

Axel Disasi, a huge centre-back, is still selected at right-back.

The Frenchman was to blame for Omari Hutchinson’s goal that secured Ipswich a 2-0 win on Monday; while Liam Delap scored a first-half penalty at Portman Road.

As in his other games at right-back, Disasi generally struggled to utilize the ball out wide and lacked the physical profile to move up and down the pitch.

There is a risk that these poor performances could have a longer-term impact on the former Monaco defender and damage his confidence.

And it is no coincidence that Disasi’s best performance in the Premier League this season came against Southampton, the only time he played in his natural position.

Of course, Reece James was only fit enough for the bench and the Italian coach may have felt he was taking a gamble by giving Malo Gusto a rest.

But playing Disasi – and other centre-backs at right-back – also blocks opportunities for young Josh Acheampong, who has excelled in his limited first-team appearances.

The 18-year-old has just signed a new contract and will be given a permanent locker for the first team at the training ground.

Using Disasi at right-back causes Chelsea defensive problems and blocks the path of a talented young player.
