Chicago Weather Forecast: Ice-effect snow is forming across the region, causing freezing rain and making traffic slippery | radar

CHICAGO (WLS) – Lake effect snow and freezing drizzle could create slippery travel conditions in the Chicago area Monday morning.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for northern and central Cook Counties and DuPage Counties until 9 p.m. and Lake Counties in Illinois and Kenosha and Racine Counties in Wisconsin until 4 p.m. on Monday.

There was some snow on the ground in the northern suburbs Monday morning.

ABC7 Accuweather meteorologist Greg Dutra said parts of the city and suburbs could see lake effect snow and freezing drizzle Monday afternoon. Dutra said the lake-effect snow band could move across northwest Indiana in the evening, resulting in about an inch of snow.

Major roads in Waukegan have been cleared, but secondary roads still require work and remain slippery.

Butler also said there will also be strong wind gusts of more than 30 miles per hour and freezing drizzle.

At Chicago airports, a ground stop was imposed at O’Hare Airport, which was later lifted. As of 11:07 a.m., 221 flights were canceled at O’Hare and 28 flights at Midway.

The first snow of the year brings icy conditions to Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

In Waukegan, snowplows and salt trucks were in use as snow covered the roads.

For Adam Carson, who owns the Supermercado Gonzalez grocery store and cafe on Grand Avenue, the cleanup started early.

“It’s always a little bit of a guessing game in the morning, especially when there’s a forecast of snow, because you don’t always know if there’s going to be snow on the ground,” Carson said.

A family friend helped him clear his store’s parking lot so customers could drive in and out.

“Luckily we have a family friend who has a snow plow just to make sure we get the place ready,” Carson said. “Because grocery stores, like a lot of businesses, have people getting things at 7 a.m., so we’re trying to stay ready.”
Others in Waukegan were busy clearing their driveways and scraping ice off their cars.

“I was outside last night when it started…I just have to be careful,” said Isaiah Goines of Waukegan. “It looked like rain, then turned into snowflakes and started to become even =>”

“The roads aren’t clear yet and it’s pretty cold,” said Daryl, a Waukegan resident.

While the cold may have bothered some people, a furry four-legged friend named Chewy was doing just fine.

“He doesn’t mind,” Daryl said. “He enjoys playing in it when he gets the chance.”
