Chiefs coach reveals he ultimately wants to leave Kansas City

Chiefs’ popular defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is widely considered the NFL’s best at what he does, although he recently revealed he has bigger ambitions before it’s all said and done.

Spagnuolo has been in Kansas City since 2019. He only had one opportunity as a head coach, a failed stint with then-St. Louis. Louis Rams from 2009-2011, but based on his recent comments he wants another one.

Speaking to the media on Thursday ahead of Week 18, Spagnuolo reiterated that he was focused on the game against the Denver Broncos but wanted a chance to serve as head coach again.

It’s a little strange that Spagnuolo didn’t get another job, considering how many less experienced people got head coaching jobs during the same period. Spagnuolo led the Rams in just 10:38, but has clearly learned a lot and has been at the helm of numerous elite defenses since his release.

Andy Reid has publicly supported Spagnuolo and believes he deserves the chance. Still, it’s scary to imagine this team without Spagnuolo calling the shots on defense.

During his six-year tenure, Spagnuolo continually transformed the unit from a laughing stock into one of the NFL’s best. All fans remember Bob Sutton’s disastrous years, so it’s a frightening thought to imagine someone else on the sidelines.

However, at 65 years old, some teams may not want to invest in Spagnuolo long-term. The league has moved to favor younger, fresher voices, but there are plenty of examples to show why that might be a bad idea. Would the Bengals be better off with Spagnuolo than Zac Taylor? What about the Raiders instead of Antonio Pierce or the Patriots instead of Jerod Mayo?

The answer is probably yes for all three and some other franchises too. Maybe Spagnuolo will get some interviews this offseason and get the opportunity he’s looking for. While Chiefs fans support him and want him to achieve his dreams, everyone in Kansas City secretly hopes he stays with the organization and continues to produce great defenses.

Right now, everyone in the building is focused on the elusive three-goal and what would be Spagnuolo’s fifth Super Bowl ring.
