Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is reportedly dealing with an ankle injury week-to-week

The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t have to sweat with a 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, but the back-to-back champions did have to sweat because of an injury to their star quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes left the game after injuring his left ankle on an incomplete pass on fourth play in the fourth quarter. Carson Wentz replaced him when the Chiefs got the ball back with 5:23 left.

Mahomes is being considered week-to-week after x-rays on his ankle came back negative, NFL Media reported Sunday.

“It’s not broken, it’s painful,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters.

After the Chiefs’ win, Mahomes was seen limping out of the locker room before moving around the stadium in a cart.

On the day, he completed 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. While Mahomes’ performance may not have been the prettiest, Sunday’s 13-1 victory was the Chiefs’ most decisive win of the season.

Mahomes’ counterpart, Jameis Winston, threw three interceptions in the loss, including two in the end zone. Cleveland substituted Winston for Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the fourth quarter.

This isn’t the first time in his career that Mahomes has struggled with an ankle injury. He memorably suffered a high ankle sprain in the 2022 divisional round and played through the injury to lead the Chiefs to the Super Bowl title.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
