Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes left Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns with an ankle injury.

Mahomes suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when Kansas City led 21-7. He limped off the field and was replaced late in the game by backup Carson Wentz. The The Chiefs labeled Mahomes questionable return, but he didn’t as Kansas City secured a 21-7 win.

Mahomes suffered the injury from a combined hit from Ogbo Okoronkwo and Mike Hall Jr. His legs became trapped under Okoronkwo’s body when Hall hit him high.

Mahomes limped off the field after the incomplete fourth pass of the game. Wentz returned to lead the offense on Kansas City’s next possession. Mahomes remained on the Kansas City sideline at the end of the game.

The injury is obviously a major concern in Kansas City as the Chiefs inch closer to the playoffs and look for a third straight Super Bowl victory. Mahomes is a two-time NFL MVP, three-time Super Bowl MVP and six-time Pro Bowler.

Kansas City has already secured a spot in the playoffs but is trying to remain the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which has a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs also have a tight window for upcoming games around the NFL’s Christmas schedule.

Kansas City will host the Houston Texans on Saturday and play a Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers the following Wednesday, for a total of three games in 11 days, including Sunday’s game against the Browns.

The good news for the Chiefs is that they have a cushion for the AFC’s top seed. With Sunday’s win, they improved to 13-1 and maintain a several-game lead in the AFC over the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers, who had the second-best record in the conference at the time with 10-3 records.

Mahomes finished Sunday’s game completing 19 of 38 passes for 159 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers. Wentz is a former first-round pick and starter for the Eagles, Colts and Commanders. Since losing his starting job in Washington in 2022 and turning to a backup role with the Rams in 2023 and the Chiefs this season, he has seen limited action in the NFL.
