Chris Paul greets his teammates after being ejected

SAN ANTONIO – With Stephon Castle, Zach Collins, Keldon Johnson and Tre Jones already shorthanded, the San Antonio Spurs traveled to Portland, Oregon, hoping to get a win without further contention.

Unfortunately, this plan was short-lived. After what was likely a verbal scuffle — Chris Paul was neither particularly lively nor aggressive — the Spurs’ 20-year-old point guard received a first-quarter ejection that forced acting coach Mitch Johnson to limit his rotation even further.

The Spurs ultimately pulled out a win over the Trail Blazers despite their weakened state, and as the team headed back to the visiting locker room at the Moda Center, Paul took it upon himself to be the first to congratulate his teammates on the win.

Next up for the Spurs is the return trip to San Antonio, where they await Anthony Edwards and the red-hot Minnesota Timberwolves in the second game of their NBA Cup catch-up schedule. Until then, the hope in the Spurs locker room is that more players will be available and fewer players will be thrown out.
