Christian McCaffrey may be out for the season with a PCL injury

Christian McCaffrey could be out for the remainder of 2024.

After Sunday’s 35-10 loss to the Bills, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters in his postgame press conference that McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury that could be season-ending.

McCaffrey went down in the second quarter and suffered a possible knee injury during a 19-yard run that initially looked like he might break through it for a long touchdown. But a few plays later, McCaffrey made a pitch to right, moved slowly a few steps and then slipped to surrender for a 5-yard loss.

McCaffrey was able to leave the field under his own power and immediately made his way to the medical tent on the sidelines. He then went to the locker room, as several reporters at the scene reported.

It was initially announced as doubtful that he would return due to a knee injury. However, he was demoted to out early in the second half.

Losing Christian is no funShanahan said.

McCaffrey missed the first eight games of the season due to bilateral Achilles tendonitis and now may not be able to play in the final five games of the season.

“Yes, it was frustrating. He had a great week of practice and I could feel his urgency and stuff,” Shanahan said. “He came out great and looked really good. It looked like he had just gotten a shoelace (tackle) there, he was just about to cancel a home visit. I suspect he got hurt on that play – I don’t know, I never got to talk to him. But he’s hurting and it’s hard for our team not to have him.”

McCaffrey had completed seven carries for 53 yards before exiting the contest.

Jordan Mason was the game’s leading rusher without McCaffrey. He finished the game with 78 yards on 13 carries.
