Christian Pulisic returns from injury in Milan’s Super Cup win over Juventus

Christian Pulisic returned from injury to lead the fightback as Milan came from behind to beat Juventus and reach the Italian Super Cup final.

The 26-year-old USMNT forward won and then converted the penalty that brought his team back into the game before compatriot Yunus Musah’s deflected cross gave them a 2-1 lead after they had been beaten in the first half by Kenan Yildiz’s goal had fallen behind.

Pulisic had missed the last four games for his club after tearing a muscle in his right calf in December and then suffering ankle problems during his rehabilitation.

Milan always had their sights set on Friday’s clash with Juventus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for their return and they did so from the start at Al-Awwal Park.

He was in fine form and earned the penalty that led to his first goal since November after former Milan midfielder Manuel Locatelli tripped him in the box in the 70th minute.

Pulisic opted for power and confidently fired his penalty into the net, although Michele Di Gregorio was unable to save it despite having the ball in his hands.

With 20 minutes left in regulation time, Musah, who came on as a substitute in the 54th minute, sent the cross which Juventus defender Federico Gatti deflected past his own goalkeeper.

“We are in the final. We showed great team spirit,” Pulisic told Mediaset. “We didn’t play well in the first half, but we’ll accept that.”

He continued: “Yes (it could be a turning point in Milan’s season), 100 percent. It gives us the confidence to keep going.

“We want to beat Inter. They are a good team. We have to play well.”

Two other Americans were in action for Juventus: midfielder Weston McKennie, who started at left-back and was booked, was replaced by Tim Weah as a substitute in the 86th minute.

The game marked the first time for new Milan head coach Sergio Conceicao, who was appointed as Paulo Fonseca’s successor earlier in the week.

Milan will now face city rivals Inter in Monday’s final after Simone Inzaghi’s side beat Serie A leaders Atalanta in the first semi-final on Thursday.

Pulisic played 21 games for Milan in all competitions this season, scoring nine goals and providing six assists.

He has earned 76 caps for the USMNT, scoring two goals and two assists in three games under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
