Christian Walker lands with the Astros as the Yankees’ first base search continues

The Yankees have one less first baseman to consider.

After initial talks fell through, top free agent Christian Walker wanted to sign a three-year, $60 million deal with the Astros instead, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.

This move will have numerous implications across the sport, as it may indicate that the Astros’ long-time star Alex Bregman will have a new home in 2025.

The Post’s Joel Sherman exclusively reported that the Yankees and Walker resumed talks after the Bronx Bombers lost Juan Soto to the Mets, but those talks stalled.

Walker, who turns 34 next March, had certain factors working against him.

The Yankees would have had to give up even more draft picks to sign him since Walker declined the qualifying offer and they had already given up two picks to sign Max Fried.

The addition of Cody Bellinger, who can play first base, also gave the Yankees additional payroll as well as a capable first baseman if they find an outfielder who is a better fit.

It’s possible the Yankees could go cheaper at first base and pursue a potential one- or two-year deal rather than committing Walker to multiple years.

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso remains the top free agent at the position, while veteran Paul Goldschmidt could be a candidate for a one-year deal.

Trade options include Josh Naylor from the Guardians, Yandy Diaz from the Rays and Nathaniel Lowe from the Rangers.

Walker’s move to the Astros should help the team solidify its position after the team moved on from the failed free agent signing of Jose Abreu last year.

Houston only got 18 home runs and 68 RBIs from its first basemen last year.

Walker slashed .251/.335/.468 with an .803 OPS, along with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs in 130 games last season.

His arrival is likely to coincide with Bregman’s departure, as teams already disagree on value and the Astros are now clearly committed to Walker.
