Christmas Day 2024: Open and closed hours, holiday service adjustments, activities

Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year. Here are some closures and service adjustments for the holiday. And if you haven’t had enough of Christmas light displays, we’ve included a list of displays that will remain open on Christmas.

Public transportation

TriMet – Buses, MAX and Portland Streetcar operate Sundays on Wednesday, December 25th. If your bus doesn’t run on Sunday, it won’t run on Christmas either. No service on WES.

Portland Aerial Tram – Closed on Christmas Day.

C Tran The buses run on Sundays on Christmas Day.

Government offices

  • Federal offices and courts – Closed.
  • Oregon and Washington State Offices and Courts – Closed.
  • Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington and Clark District Offices, City of Portland and Vancouver Offices, Metro Regional Center – closed.
  • Portland Parking Meters: Free only on Wednesday, December 25, except in Portland parks where parking charges apply.
  • Regular mail (USPS) will not be delivered on Wednesday and post offices will remain closed.

District libraries: All Multnomah County locations will be closed December 24-25. Most branches in Washington County will also be closed both days. Check with your local branch for holiday hours. Clackamas County libraries will be closed December 24-25.

Christmas light displays will be open on Christmas Day

Magic of Lights (Salem)

These Christmas lights made their debut at the Oregon State Fair and Exposition Center in 2023. Did you miss them? This year you also have the opportunity to visit the drive-in attraction, which features light displays and animations made from millions of individual LED lights. Stay warm in your car as you drive through classic holiday favorites like Winter Wonderland, the 12 Days of Christmas, Toyland, Festive Elves and Reindeer Road.

Nightly through Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m., Oregon State Fairgrounds, 2330 17th St. NE, Salem; Tickets are per vehicle and prices vary by night, starting at $19; magicoflights.com/locations/salem-or.

Winter wonderland

The Drive-In Light Show at Portland International Raceway, said to be the largest holiday light show in the Pacific Northwest, is back with another event for 2024. Stay warm and dry in your own vehicle as you admire more than 250 colorful light set pieces and many fully animated scenes along the race track. All proceeds from the event benefit the Sunshine Division’s year-round hunger relief efforts, which provide thousands of free, nutritious meals to Portland families in need.

Extended opening hours 4:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. daily 15th – 31st. December, Portland International Raceway, 1940 N. Victory Blvd.; General admission for single vehicles varies by date and size of vehicle and starts at $38; winterwonderlandportland.com.

Peacock Alley

Peacock Lane is open and welcoming the community to one of Portland’s essential holiday traditions for more than 100 years.

Keizer Miracle of Lights Display

Keizer’s Gubser neighborhood has been lighting up the holidays for more than 30 years. The event is a fundraiser for Marion/Polk Food Share and features a drive-thru or walk-through experience of fun neighborhood exhibits. Before you leave the area, there is a donation station on 14th Street.
