City council is deciding next steps for a 6,500-home project near Schriever Space Force Base

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — The corner of Drennan Road and Curtis Road could be transformed into a busy street if the Colorado Springs City Council annexes about 2,000 acres of land and allows development into a neighborhood of 6,500 residents.

But those who live near the country tell it KRDO13 Investigated They fear this would affect their way of life.

Above is a rough map of the proposed annexation from a Colorado Springs Planning Commission report.

Right now there isn’t much other than snow and grass in the area where the O’Neil Group wants to develop, but there are some county residents in the area who don’t want the new project to go there.

“We have a very peaceful, quiet way of life,” said Sara Shipley, who lives near the proposed annexation. “And we feel like we would lose a lot of it (if the land is developed).”

KRDO13 Investigated also spoke to the developers vying for annexation.

Andy Merritt, chief strategy officer at O’Neil Group, said the development would represent a boom for those working in the Space Force.

“We believe this project can serve both the broader community and hopefully the needs of the men and women stationed at both Petersen and Schriever (space bases),” Merritt said.

The Colorado Springs City Council has not yet voted on the annexation or development. The next step in the process is at 9 a.m. Wednesday when the city Planning Commission holds a public meeting at the Regional Development Center at 2880 International Circle.
