Clemson falls in overtime to rival Gamecocks

COLUMBIA – South Carolina defeated No. 25 Clemson 91-88 in overtime at Colonial Life Arena on Tuesday night. It is the second game in a row that the Tigers have lost in overtime.

Christian Reeves had a chance to tie the game from the free throw line with 3.7 seconds left in overtime, but his first attempt bounced off the rim. His second shot went astray and the Tigers immediately fouled with 3.5 seconds left.

South Carolina then made two free throws and Chase Hunter’s three-pointer as time expired went wide.

After going scoreless in the first half, Chase Hunter came back with a vengeance after halftime, scoring all 27 points to give Clemson the lead. The veteran guard shot 5 of 7 from distance, including hitting his final five.

Hunter’s three-pointer as time expired sent the game into overtime.

Ian Schieffelin scored 23 points before fouling out and also grabbed 12 rebounds, giving him his fifth double-double of the season. The veteran big man was a productive 6-of-9 from the field and had to not only battle against an aggressive South Carolina defense, but also endure some questionable refereeing.

Jaeden Zackery added 10 points and Jake Hiedbreder also had 10, giving Clemson four players with double-digit scoring.

Collin Murray-Boyles led South Carolina with 22 points, while Myles Stute added 19 of his own and hit 5 of 6 from deep.

After the Gamecocks controlled nearly the entire first half and the first ten minutes of the second half, the two teams battled back and forth down the stretch.

The Tigers’ shooting woes continued early, as Clemson shot just 31% from the floor in the first half, including a paltry 1 of 7 from distance, allowing the Gamecocks to build a double-digit lead.

After the Gamecocks took a 5-0 lead early in the game, Clemson played from behind for most of the contest. The Tigers didn’t take their first lead until midway through the second half when Chauncey Wiggins scored an alley-oop to give Clemson a 54-53 lead.

The Tigers trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but a 14-0 run, highlighted by a pair of layups from Jake Hiedbreder, allowed Clemson to tie the game at 24-24 with less than four minutes remaining End in the first half.

South Carolina immediately went on a 10-0 run and extended the lead back to two 10, but two free throws from Ian Schieffelin left the Tigers trailing 34-26 heading into halftime.

Clemson falls to 9-3 (1-0) on the season, while South Carolina moves to 8-3. The Gamecocks are now 3-0 against ACC teams this season.
