Cleveland Browns Myles Garrett: ‘I’m not trying to rebuild’

It’s no state secret to say that the 2024 season didn’t go as expected for the Cleveland Browns.

The team opened the campaign on September 8 with visions of another playoff run, but things began to unravel with an opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Fast forward to just three wins in 14 games, a historically poor offense – first with quarterback Deshaun Watson and then with Jameis Winston – another season-ending injury to running back Nick Chubb and a general feeling of doom and gloom, and the situation can, at Sometimes I feel worse than I have in a long time.

There are only three games left on the schedule and then another offseason of uncertainty begins for the Browns. Who’s coming back? Who will be replaced? And most importantly, what will general manager Andrew Berry do about the quarterback situation?

Those are just a few of the questions everyone will be looking for answers to, and the person who could be top of mind is defensive end Myles Garrett, who is finishing his eighth season in Cleveland.

Garrett has experienced the highs – two playoff appearances – and definitely the lows – a winless rookie season under head coach Hue Jackson.

And as he looks to the future, Garrett wants to know exactly what the plan is to finally get the franchise on track, as he said Friday when asked what’s next (quote from a transcript provided by the team ):

“First and foremost, I want to win and I want the Browns to be able to put me and us in a position to win. And I’m not trying to rebuild it. I’m just trying to win. I want that to be clear when the season is over and we have these conversations. I would like you to be able to shed light on this and illustrate this for me so that I can see this in the near future. Because that’s all we want to do.

“I want to remain loyal to a team that shows me loyalty and trust in me by drafting me. But at the end of the day we have to do what is best for us. So if we have that alignment, it’s still possible in the near future: win, go deep into the playoffs, put together a great defense, time of possession, game play, offense, get all the guys back.

“And I think that would really calm me down and calm me down. And not just mine, but a lot of people on defense, on the D-line, around the team. But we have to continue to make progress, not just as players but from top to bottom.”

Garrett continued to say, as he always has, that he is happy in Cleveland and wants to stay with the team. But he also noted that his feelings about the team that selected him could well change if another multi-year rebuild is planned.

But while his comments will likely be blasted by the media looking for clicks and hot takes, Garrett didn’t actually say something everyone already knew. The Browns need to improve the quarterback position in the offseason, fill some other holes on the roster, and get back to focusing on what matters most, which is winning games, rather than answering questions about one form or another or nonsense every week.

Still, Garrett has never been a player to spout nonsense, and as the game’s best defensive player, his words carry weight in the halls of the team’s headquarters in Berea.

So even if nothing happens in the near future, we can add Garrett’s comments to the “front office will be notified” file and see what happens in the coming months.
