Why the Clippers could cover the spread/win

The Trail Blazers have lost four of their last five games. In those games, Portland was not good defensively. They are allowing 117.2 points per game during that stretch and opponents are shooting 47.4 percent against them. When Portland allows more than 115 points this season, its record is 3-19. Given the way the Trail Blazers have been playing defensively lately and the season as a whole, the Clippers should have no trouble scoring 115 points in this game.

Los Angeles is a pretty good defensive team. They have allowed the fifth-fewest points per game, fourth-fewest field goals made and sixth-fewest three-pointers made this season. In fact, they’re coming off a game where they absolutely dominated the Brooklyn Nets defensively. This showed how great their defense really can be. Portland is a bad offensive team. So don’t be surprised if the Clippers have another great defensive game on Thursday night.

The Trail Blazers are dealing with some injuries. Jerami Grant, Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams are all out. Deni Avidja is questionable. Portland can’t afford for all of these players to miss this game. Yes, they aren’t the highest scoring players, but these four are big contributors for the Trail Blazers. Keep an eye on the Portland injury report. If the Trail Blazers actually have to play without these four players, the Clippers have a great chance at a big win.

Why the Trail Blazers could cover the spread/win

Portland has to take on the Clippers on defense. Defense hasn’t been their strong suit lately, but it needs to step up if there’s any chance of them winning this game. The good news is that Los Angeles is not a strong offensive team. They average 108.9 points per game, which is the eighth lowest in the NBA. Additionally, Los Angeles has a tendency to turn the ball over a lot. If the Trail Blazers can keep the Clippers under 115 points, they have a great chance of erasing the lead.

The Trail Blazers’ injuries have been noted. However, their two top scorers are still active. Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe are averaging 18.7 and 18.4 points per game, respectively. Neither player shoots the ball particularly well, but they take a lot of shots. Both of these players will need to play well on Thursday night. If each of them scores more than 20 points or close to it, the Trail Blazers have a chance to at least cover the gap.

Clippers-Trail Blazers final prediction and picks

The Clippers are the better team, and that will show. I’ll take the Clippers to cover the spread.

Final Prediction and Pick between Clippers and Trail Blazers: Clippers -6.5 (-106)
