CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten debunked President Biden’s recent claim that he could have won re-election had he stayed in the 2024 race.

After President-elect Trump’s stunning victory in November, many Democrats have theorized about what could have been done differently, and Biden is no exception.

Asked in an interview with USA Today this week whether he would have won had he not dropped out on July 21, Biden replied, “It’s presumptuous to say that, but I think so.” USA Today summarized, that he continued by adding that he based this view on polls he had reviewed.

However, Enten said Biden’s claims were nonsense.

“Based on the poll data, I classify Biden’s statement that he could have beaten Trump as ‘complete idiot,'” he wrote in a post on Wednesday X. “Biden was well behind Trump when he dropped out. Biden never led in all of 2024. And no incumbent president who was anywhere near as unpopular as Biden has ever won.”

In the video he posted along with the tweet, Enten explained: “Why am I saying that his statement that he could have won the 2024 election if he had stayed in the race is complete nonsense? Just look around here.”

He then showed the poll numbers from the time Biden dropped out of the race, particularly in the battleground Great Lake states where “Donald Trump was ahead on all three counts.”

After pointing to similar advantages in other key regions, he continued, “But Trump not only had the edge, he actually had a big lead in these key battleground states.”

“My goodness,” he said as he marveled at Trump’s references at the time and then expanded the scope of the analysis.

“So let’s look at the entire 2024 campaign: ‘Days Biden led Trump in 2024 when Biden was still in the race,'” he said, pointing to a giant 0 on the screen. “Get this. Zero! Nada! No days! Biden was not days ahead of Donald Trump.”

After showing that there is no record of incumbents winning with a negative approval rating, Enten summarized his findings.

“The bottom line is: Joe Biden was behind, he has always been behind and he most likely would have lagged,” the data expert said.
