Code Blue Alerts: Parts of NY, NJ, CT are urged to take precautions as extreme cold and gusty winds develop

NEW YORK (WABC) – Officials across the Tri-State are urging residents to take precautions as many areas will experience extreme cold and gusty winds through Thursday.

There is an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia as overnight temperatures in areas such as New York City and Long Island range from 1 to 14 degrees.

Overnight temperatures of -30 to -20 degrees are expected in the North Country, with temperatures of -30 to -20 in the Mohawk Valley, the Capital Region, Central New York, Western New York, Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier Regions degrees can be expected. 20 to 0 degrees.

“These conditions pose extraordinary risks to anyone exposed to the elements or unable to adequately heat their home, and my administration is mobilizing state resources to assist when needed,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

According to state regulations, a Code Blue automatically applies if the temperature and wind are below 32 degrees. Local social service districts are required by law to take the necessary steps to ensure that homeless people have access to shelter and that shelter hours are extended.

Warming centers will be available in communities if needed and individuals are urged to contact their local government to find one near them.

In Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont ordered the state’s strict cold weather protocol to go into effect at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, and remain in effect until noon on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

Anyone needing accommodations is asked to call 2-1-1 to connect to these services or visit 211ct.org to view a list of locations. If necessary, transport can be organized.

“Being outdoors for extended periods of time during these extreme conditions can be deadly, and we want to spread the word that there are emergency shelters and warming centers throughout Connecticut. Anyone needing a place to stay warm is urged to call 2-1. 1 or visit 211ct.org to find available options,” Lamont said.

Meanwhile, the city of Newark, New Jersey extended its Code Blue from Monday, January 6th to Monday, January 13th.

The City of Newark Housing Code requires all property owners to provide heat with an indoor temperature of at least 68°F between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. and an indoor temperature of at least 75°F between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. from October 1 through May 1 Temperature of 65F. To report no heat or hot water in your home, call the Code Enforcement Division at (973) 733-6471.

The shelters will be open longer hours and increase their bed capacity.
