We have some winter weather advisories for lingering issues that we’re still seeing, sort of post-storm. STILL WINTER STORM WARNING. PARTICULARLY IN THE HIGH AREAS OF WEST VIRGINIA AND EVEN IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA AND VIRGINIA THERE ARE STILL SOME SNOW SHOWERS AT THIS HOUR. THIS WINTER ADVISORY, IN EFFECT UNTIL 9:00 THIS MORNING, SHOULD RESULT IN STORMY WEATHER EASING AS THE WIND LESSES, BUT IT ALSO APPLIES TO OUR NORTHERN COUNTIES. ADRIANNA MADE A REALLY GOOD POINT BEFORE. THE AREAS WHICH HAVE THE HIGHEST TROPICAL TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES AT THIS POINT ARE THE AREAS WHERE THERE WAS SNOW AND SLIGHTNESS ON SUNDAY. THE AREAS THAT RECEIVED ONLY SOME RAIN AND FREEZING RAIN YESTERDAY DRIED OUT IMMEDIATELY. We’ve had a lot of dry roads in the Triad, but anything that looks wet is probably icy this morning because our temperatures are terribly cold. In the highlands the winds continue to blow strong, and only for about another hour, we’re talking about 40 minutes. We will have a wind warning in place for the mountains, but the wind will gradually decrease throughout the day. TODAY WE HAVE SEEN REGULAR GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH, PARTICULARLY IN ALLEGHENY COUNTY NORTHWARD INTO PATRICK, GRAYSON AND CARROLL COUNTIES. THIS MORNING. This is certainly enough to reduce the wind temperature. The sustained winds are quite strong for this time of day. 5 to 10 mph, with gusts triangulating to 15 to 20. And as cold as it is, the wind will certainly be a factor this morning. As you get up and go out today, I know that many children are staying home today simply for fear of remaining problems with black ice. THIS MORNING WE HAVE TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S IN THE LARGE AREAS AND IN THE MOUNTAINS. And you can see these snow showers continuing to explode like this. WIND COOL TEMPERATURE ALONG THE I-40 CORRIDOR FEEL CLOSER TO 20, WITH A WIND CHILL TEMPERATURE OF 19 CURRENTLY IN GREENSBORO AND 16 IN NORTH WILKESBORO. There will be snow showers for a while today before it tapers off and then sunshine will prevail for the rest of the day. The gusts you see there are mostly from now until midday, and then they start to relax a little more. Expect temperatures to be around 30°C and with this wind it will feel colder than the maximum temperature of around 39°C. THIS AFTERNOON SHOULD BE A LITTLE COLDER IN THE FOOTHILLS. GUSTS UP TO 20 MILES PER HOUR TODAY, LIKELY EVEN EARLY IN THE DAY, WILL REMAIN QUITE STORMY IN THE MOUNTAINS. Temperatures will remain above 20°C, with snow showers in the morning. THE REST OF THE WEEK WE HAVE COLD SUNSHINE IN THE MORNING AND COLD SUNSHINE IN THE AFTERNOON. Highs in the 30s to near 40 through Thursday. WE WILL ALSO BE WATCHING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF POTENTIALLY MORE WINTERY WEATHER LATER THIS WEEK. HERE IS ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE OF OUR EUROPEAN MODEL. We expect a storm to develop near the Texas coast and move toward us. THIS SYSTEM IS OF COURSE TRYING TO BRING SOME SNOW TO OUR AREAS LATE FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WINTER SYSTEMS, ESPECIALLY IN NORTH CAROLINA. It’s never just flat snow. Typically there is a winter weather, ice component, or even a rain component that accompanies it. So we’re still working on the details, but we have a good chance. For some accumulation of snow.
