Cold winds howl, snow showers fly, but the hope of warmth soon follows

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – We’ll be feeling some seasons of weather across eastern Iowa in the coming days.

Your first warning: Strong gusts and isolated snow showers continue

The expected cold front has passed the TV9 viewing area and we are feeling the change. Strong northwest winds are expected throughout the evening, with gusts between 40 and 55 mph.

Also keep an eye out for snow showers moving through the area. Although these will be limited, very thin snow accumulation is possible in the areas where they occur. Visibility is limited during such snow showers. Therefore, be particularly careful when traveling.

Temperatures will continue to drop into the single digits above zero on the thermometer. Wind chill will fall below zero later this evening and will not lose the negative sign until tomorrow morning.

Forecast wind chill values through Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Even if the sun shines a little more often on Thursday, it will counteract the northwesterly winds. As a result, it will be difficult to warm temperatures that much. Highs will be in the upper 10s to the north and low 20s to the south.

The warming trend returns at the weekend

Another cool night is expected on Thursday evening, but the wind will be significantly lighter. Therefore, wind chill should be less of a problem. Expect lows in the single digits to low 10s.

Temperatures rise every day from Friday to Sunday. Highs will climb back toward the upper 20s to lower 30s on Friday and reach the upper 40s to mid 50s on Sunday. There will be a light breeze every day, this time from the south. Also expect a mix of sun and clouds.

Your first warning: The system early in the week will bring light rainfall

A storm system is expected to have a small impact on our weather next week, although the overall impact is likely to be minor. A low pressure area will form near the TV9 viewing area, so we will be in a relatively dry zone within it.

However, there may be some light rain showers overnight from Sunday to Monday. As colder air arrives, some light snow showers are possible Tuesday. These are both very slim chances and, again, the impact will be small.

Some light rain is possible early next week.

Temperatures will remain cool until the middle of next week, but there will be some signs of recovery at the end of the 9 days.

Cold winds will howl into the early hours of Thursday, but a warm-up will soon follow.
