Cold, with two more chances of snow before Christmas

We have two more chances for more snow and several very cold days before Santa arrives in Massachusetts. The storm, which dumped up to 5 inches of snow in some parts of Massachusetts and posed major challenges for travelers Friday, will hang over Halifax Saturday morning. Behind it, StormTeam 5 meteorologist Mike Wankum said cold air will move into our area. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a chance of temporary thunderstorms. Temperatures will be just a few degrees below freezing, so some melting will occur. “The cold really sets in on Sunday and Monday,” Wankum said. “Even if we recover, it will take a while to get back to average, which should be around 40 degrees this time of year.”StormTeam 5 Tools: Conclusions | Futurecast | Sunday morning traffic also brings gusty winds. Wankum said wind chills will be below zero in most of the region. These winds would subside on Monday and temperatures would slowly rise again. “There’s a system coming in out here in the West and it’s going to bring some milder air with it. And depending on what time this comes through, we could actually see a little bit of snow on Christmas Eve,” Wankum said. For this storm the timing determines whether the precipitation falls as snow or as a wintry mix. “If it comes through at 6 a.m., it’s cold enough to snow. If it slows down and comes in later, it will warm up too much and it will become more of a wintry mix and everything else,” Wankum said. According to Wankum, if the timing works out, we could expect one to two centimeters of snow in large parts of the region. Technically, snow on Christmas Eve — or even snow left on the ground from a previous storm — wouldn’t be a white Christmas. The last time Boston experienced a white Christmas, meaning at least an inch of snow fell by 7 a.m., was in 2009.
