Colder temperatures are on the way, with winter storms underway in parts of Michigan

Colder temperatures are expected in southeastern Michigan as a blast of arctic air reaches the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning Tuesday for a portion of southwest Michigan and counties surrounding Grand Rapids, warning of snow accumulations of up to 6 and 14 inches, respectively.

According to the NWS, travel could be difficult in southwest Michigan, including the cities of Jenison, Kalamazoo, Hastings, South Haven, Holland, Grand Rapids and Grand Haven.

Travel could be difficult or impossible in the Grand Rapids area, including Lake, Mason, Muskegon, Newaygo and Oceana counties. Commuters can expect dangerous conditions there on Wednesday morning and into the evening, the weather service said.

Temperatures will be warmer on Tuesday, with highs of 46 degrees in Detroit and lows around 30 degrees, the local NWS post on X announced.

According to the NWS, the mercury will drop at least 10 degrees through Wednesday, when residents can expect highs of 36 degrees and lows in the teens.

Lake-effect snowfall could also occur in southeastern Michigan on Wednesday as gusty winds of up to 35 miles per hour blow across the area. Meteorologists expect the snow to ease over the next day without accumulating more than about 3-4 inches.

Temperatures will continue to fall on Thursday as the mercury peaks around 20°C before reaching lows around 10°C. Wind chills could dip into the single digits, according to the NWS.

Winter weather changes are not entirely unprecedented for Southeast Michigan, said Kyle Klein, a meteorologist with the weather service.

“Usually we have lows that extend across the Great Lakes region, so they pull milder air in front of them from the south,” he said. “And then they’ll pull in colder Canadian air behind them that normally falls from northern Canada, and that will create a colder air mass behind them.”
