College basketball rankings: CBS Top 25 and 1 see several changes ahead of big weekend schedule

After another quiet week of college basketball action, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports updated his top 25 and 1 rankings.

Since Parrish is expected to have more work to do next day with next weekend’s standings, here’s how his final rankings fared heading into the holiday week.

Tennessee will likely enter SEC play next month with an undefeated record. In a conference that has 10 teams on Parrish’s roster, that’s an impressive feat despite their tight schedule.

Transfer to North Florida Chaz Lanier was the star of the show in Knoxville during the non-conference portion of the season, averaging 18.9 points per game and leading the undefeated Vols.

There is no team in the country with a better resume than Auburn heading into Christmas. With victories HoustonIowa State, North Carolina and Memphis – The only negative came during Auburn’s only real road game of the season so far at Duke.

Auburn has a huge neutral matchup (in Birmingham, AL – basically a home game for the Tigers) against Purdue on Saturday to help them add to their already impressive resume.

Auburn is the only blemish on the Cyclones’ schedule to this point in the season – an 83-81 loss at the Maui Invitational. Iowa State led by as many as 18 points and held the lead most of the way before the Tigers’ second-half surge.

Since then, they are 6-0, including a win over a top-five Marquette team early in December, and beat Iowa 89-80 the following week in the Cy-Hawk Series.

Parrish called Mark Pope’s Kentucky team the history of college basketball in the early months of the season. If there hadn’t been a hiccup Clemsonhe believes the Wildcats would take Tennessee’s spot as No. 1 in the current AP poll.

The Wildcats have already picked up wins against Duke and Gonzaga and eliminated their in-state rival Louisville to set the stage for one final non-conference test Ohio State at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Duke earned arguably the best win in the country after defeating Auburn at home on December 4th. However, the loss to Kentucky in November prevents Parrish from placing the Blue Devils ahead of the Wildcats, not to mention the three-point loss to Kansas as well.

Still, Duke was up 5-0 on Saturday and improved to 2-0 in ACC play Georgia Tech on the street.

The Crimson Tide faced one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country in November, playing three straight top-25 teams. That was before they went undefeated in their Thanksgiving week tournament against teams like… Rutgers And Oregonwho have made solid starts this season.

He immediately turned around, beating UNC by 15 points and defeating Creighton in Tuscaloosa. The tide is rolling in as SEC play approaches.

Kansas remained undefeated after facing Michigan State, UNC and Duke in November. December didn’t treat her so kindly.

They lost by double digits to Creighton in the Big 12-Big East battle, traveled to Missouri to play the Tigers and were defeated in a game in which they trailed by as many as 24 points. The Jayhawks, however, cleaned up NC State their next time off and will try to get back on track Saturday against Brown before beginning conference play on New Year’s Eve.

Florida’s 11-game unbeaten streak this season has seen them defeat five major conference opponents, including North Carolina earlier this week in Charlotte.

With four players averaging double figures than the Gators so far this season, Walter Clayton Jr. In his second year with the program, he is a leader. Entering the weekend, he is averaging 18.5 points per game along with 3.5 assists and 3.5 boards.

Marquette started the season 8-0 before facing Iowa State in early December. They followed with a 14-point win over the 11th-place team Wisconsin team, but a road loss to Dayton after leading by as many as 13 points was not a good look for the Golden Eagles.

With Big East basketball in full swing with a 10-point win over Butler on Dec. 17, Marquette looks set to lose the conference after UConn lost three non-conference games.

You can never rule out a Tom Izzo-led Michigan State team, and the Spartans have proven why so far this season. Entering the season unranked and with a record of 5-2, Michigan State has won its last four games and is undefeated so far this month.

For their efforts, they were ranked 20th in the most recent AP Top 25 poll and are now one of five teams in the Big Ten Conference this week.
