College football bowl games today: The schedule includes two matchups

The ball has dropped, “Auld Lang Syne” has been sung across the country and the year 2025 has officially arrived. But college football bowl season isn’t quite over yet. This is clearly the result after the big playoff showdown on New Year’s Day, but there are still a few deserving teams that will take their place in the spotlight over the next few days.

There are two games on the schedule this Friday, starting with a salute to the officials and ending with a chaotic sandwich-spiced celebration. Unfortunately, there are no more edible mascots, but here’s a look at the participants.

Time/TV/Location: 4 p.m. ET, ESPN, Dallas.

Why watch: The day’s doubleheader begins with the five-player Lone Star State showdown. Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but North Texas will be without several outgoing transfers, most notably starting quarterback Chandler Morris and leading WR DT Sheffield. Drew Mestemaker will make his starting debut as QB for the Mean Green, and he will likely have extensive use of their most experienced WR, Damon Ward. The Bobcats also have some departures, but QB Jordan McCloud is still there. His main targets are WRs Joey Hobert and Jaden Williams.

Why it might disappoint: Mean Green fans will have to hope that the team’s young players perform right away, but it’s more likely that the Bobcats’ experienced hands will put this game on hold with relative ease.

Time/TV/Location: Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Charlotte, NC

Why watch: The Power Conferences take the field again for the nightcap, which will culminate in an extremely chaotic postgame ritual. The Hokies will have the last chance to salvage what has been a largely disappointing postseason for the ACC, but the Golden Gophers arrive in better health. Minnesota’s playmaking trio of QB Max Brosmer, WR Daniel Jackson and RB Darius Taylor should all be there. Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones was limited down the stretch due to various injuries and is not expected to play. The good news is that backup William “Pop” Watson is also returning to the Hokies next year, and he saw some late-season action, including the season-ending win over Virginia.
