College Football Playoff first round results: Ohio State, Texas, Penn State advance in losses

After the College Football Playoff began Friday with No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 10 Indiana, the first round ended Saturday with three lopsided results.

Penn State took care of business in Happy Valley early in the day, using two early pick-6s to secure a 38-10 win over an overwhelmed SMU. Later, in Austin, No. 5 Texas edged No. 12 Clemson in a 38-24 game that wasn’t as close as the final score would suggest. The nightcap was even more one-sided, as No. 8 Ohio State pulled away from No. 9 Tennessee with a 42-17 win.

What was the reason for all the glitches? Line play was a key element that stood out in every match.

The quarter-finals have now been decided, and on paper there are likely to be some much more competitive games.
