College Football Playoff Rankings: Playoff image with points

In less than a week, the College Football Playoff field will finally be chosen. Is the committee on the right track?

With the regular season over, the field for the first 12-team playoffs is taking shape as Conference Championship week approaches. Regardless of whether teams play this week or not, several teams are still trying to make arguments as to why they should be on the field or why they should have home field advantage in the first round.

This weekend is the last chance to not only impress the selection committee, but also dispel any doubts by punching the automatic ticket to the playoffs. The penultimate rankings give some clues as to what may happen on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean everything is right. Here are the grades for the selection committee’s decisions in the latest rankings.

After a perfect regular season, the Ducks enter the Big Ten Championship game with a playoff spot secured and even first place.

The win against Texas A&M wasn’t particularly impressive from an offensive standpoint, but the ranking could be justified with a revenge win against Georgia.

Penn State suddenly has a chance to get a bye in the first round. However, a few spots are likely to fall if the Nittany Lions can’t beat Oregon.

Given the way Notre Dame has been playing, the Fighting Irish have a reason to outperform Penn State. Regardless, they can’t be higher than the number 5 that secured it.

Just surviving Georgia Tech will ensure the Bulldogs get into the playoffs, even if they don’t play particularly well. If Georgia loses to Texas, Sunday will be the time to see how far it falls.

Yes, Ohio State beat Penn State and Indiana. Still, they lost to a terrible Michigan team. The Buckeyes should have lost more and should not have been able to host a playoff game.

The Volunteers must be angry if they have to play on the road even after Ohio State’s disastrous performance. Tennessee has a good chance of being the home team in the first round.

Take care of business in the ACC title game and SMU will be a top three seed in that group. If SMU loses to Clemson, it shouldn’t be eliminated from the playoff field entirely.

Indiana sits comfortably at No. 9 and feels comfortable in its playoff spot, even though it’s almost certain that the Hoosiers will have to play on the road.

If you win, it’s Boise State’s turn. Lose and the Broncos will be out of the playoff field. Boise State has a significant lead over the Big 12 and occupies one of the top four spots.

All Alabama can do is hope and pray that the favorite wins in conference title week so it can’t be pushed out of the playoffs. However, the Crimson Tide do not have the composition of a playoff team.

Miami deserved the fall after the loss to Syracuse. But falling six spots down against a team that’s now ranked, behind Alabama, and has virtually no chance of moving up? The Hurricanes messed up a bit.

Mississippi will not participate in the playoffs due to devastating losses to unranked teams. The rebels should not be near the field.

South Carolina may have lost to Mississippi, but the record is far more impressive than what the Rebels accomplished. The Gamecocks deserve some chance to make the playoffs, and that’s not going to happen now.

With Arizona State five spots behind Boise State, it will be extremely difficult to get a bye in the first round even if it wins the Big 12, which isn’t right for a team that plays as well as the Sun Devils.

Right behind Arizona State, Iowa State has the same argument as the Sun Devils in that if they win, they don’t have much of a chance of staying out of 12th place in the standings.

Ranking doesn’t matter much as Clemson is in a win-and-in contest in the ACC Championship Game.

It’s a shame to see how far BYU has fallen after being undefeated a few weeks ago. Given the quality of the wins, the Cougars could easily be ranked higher than Clemson.

Missouri’s best win was against Vanderbilt. That doesn’t really mean the Tigers should be in the top 20.

Tulane’s loss really benefited UNLV and became a game-breaker. Beat Boise State and UNLV are in the playoffs and ready to cause chaos.
