After more than four months of on-field results and politics from coaches, athletic directors and fans, the College Football Playoff selection committee announced the 12-team field on Sunday.

The biggest question on Sunday was who would clinch the final overall spot between Alabama and SMU.

The committee put SMU (11-2) on the field one night after it lost to Clemson 34-31 on a last-second field goal in the ACC championship game. Alabama (9-3) is eliminated after failing to make its conference title game.

This decision will be debated for a long time. As for the rest of the bracket, it evolved like this:

1. Oregon (13-0, Big Ten champion)

2. Georgia (11-2, SEC champions)

3. Boise State (12-1, Mountain West champions)

4. Arizona State (11-2, Big 12 champion)

No. 12 Clemson (10-3, ACC champion) at No. 5 Texas (11-2, overall): Dec. 20, 8 p.m. AND

No. 11 SMU (11-2, overall) at No. 6 Penn State (11-2, overall): Dec. 21, 12 p.m. ET

No. 10 Indiana (11-1, overall) at No. 7 Notre Dame (11-1, overall): Dec. 21, 4 p.m. ET

No. 9 Tennessee (10-2, overall) and No. 8 Ohio State (10-2, overall): Dec. 21, 8 p.m. ET

It will be a clash of teams from Indiana as the Hoosiers will head north to take on the Fighting Irish.

  • Herbstreit acknowledges the terrible loss in Alabama

Analyst Kirk Herbstreit mentioned Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma later in the broadcast.

There will be great consternation for both of these fan bases (SMU and Alabama) as ESPN tries to drag things out as long as possible.

  • Saban makes the case for Alabama

Nick Saban promotes Alabama over SMU in a self-serving and suboptimal moment on the selection show early in production.

“All wins are not the same as other wins.” Alabama was beaten by a 6-6 Oklahoma team, but he forgot to mention that.
