College Football Playoff Top 25: Fourth 2024 CFP Rankings Revealed

ESPN’s College Football Playoff Top 25 tell-all show set the tone for the final week of the regular season. The latest snapshot of what the selection committee believes is sure to spark controversy after a Saturday of upsets.

In the first year of the new format, the top four seeded conference champions will receive the top four seeds, earning a bye to the quarterfinals to be played at one of the New Years Six bowl venues. The remaining eight bids are filled by seven overall qualifiers and the fifth-highest ranked conference champion. The higher seeded teams host the lower seeded teams in the first round.

For these reasons, the College Football Playoff top 25 does not necessarily reflect the final round.

With one week left in the regular season, the selection committee has ranked the top 25 teams with a chance at a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff as follows.

The Ducks are the last undefeated team. Dan Lanning’s group has secured a spot in the Big Ten title game, which will determine whether they receive a first-round bye. Oregon had two weeks to prepare for rival Washington.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Washington

After being a top Big Ten contender early in the season, Ohio State suffered a road loss to Oregon. However, an easy win over Indiana solidified Ohio State as one of the top playoff contenders.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Michigan

After a loss to Georgia, Texas was able to bounce back with wins and also improve the eye test. The Longhorns remain at the top of the SEC with only one rivalry matchup standing between them and an appearance in a conference championship game.

Upcoming date: at Texas A&M

Penn State has survived the Big Ten schedule and is now just one regular-season win away from effectively establishing itself in the CFP. While they need help getting to the Big Ten title game and fighting for a bye, they are likely first-round hosts.

Upcoming Schedule: vs. Maryland

Despite suffering an early loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame capitalized on opportunities to remain a CFP contender and saw the teams around them fall one by one. Now the Fighting Irish appear poised to host a first-round game.

Upcoming schedule: at USC

Miami fell victim to an upset against Georgia Tech but remains atop the ACC with a clear path to the CFP and a first-round bye if they can win the regular season and conference championship.

Next schedule: in Syracuse

After talk of the possibility of Georgia missing the CFP field, they have now turned their attention to the SEC Championship Game and have climbed back to the top of the rankings thanks to the upsets around them.

Upcoming Schedule: vs. Georgia Tech

After surviving several SEC games with wins, the Volunteers lost their second conference game to Georgia, eliminating them from the SEC conversation. A series of upsets Saturday gave Tennessee new life as their conference rivals got out of the way.

Next schedule: at Vanderbilt

In their first season in the ACC, the Mustangs have led the league in conference play so far, giving them a chance to not only make the 12-team CFP field, but also potentially secure a first-round bye if they qualify Conference finish champions. The losses around them also only served to increase the overall odds.

Upcoming Schedule: vs. California

College football’s surprising story: First-year coach Curt Cignetti made good on his promise to win at Indiana by entering the final month undefeated. The Hoosiers lost their toughest game to Ohio State, but any discussion of their CFP resume was wiped out by other teams’ losses.

Upcoming Schedule: vs. Purdue

With their only loss to Oregon, Boise State is the top-seeded group of five and boasts a Heisman contender in Ashton Jeanty. The Broncos continue to slowly climb up the rankings, giving them a chance to get a first-round bye and separate themselves from the top Big 12 teams.

Upcoming schedule: vs. Oregon State

Clemson has slowly moved back up the standings with two losses and is now firmly in the running for a CFP spot thanks to a top-25 rivalry matchup against South Carolina this week. The Tigers still trail Miami and SMU among ACC teams and are in the best place the conference has seen all season.
