Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard had to briefly leave the Orange Bowl late in the second quarter after being thrown to the ground.

Leonard was hit while throwing the ball and hit the back of his head on the turf. When Leonard stood up, he was a little shaky and was immediately noticed by an official who signaled on the sideline for Leonard to be checked. The quarterback was immediately escorted to the Notre Dame medical tent.

Steve Angeli replaced Leonard with the Irish trailing 10-0. However, Leonard was able to return early in the third quarter after he was diagnosed with a concussion. According to a sideline report from ESPN, Leonard was “asymptomatic” and was allowed to return.

Leonard’s departure came as Notre Dame offensive lineman Rocco Spindler received treatment from the training staff. Spindler was the second offensive lineman to leave the game due to injury after starting left tackle Anthonie Knapp was run over and apparently suffered an injury to his left ankle. Knapp moved cautiously on the sidelines and did not return to the game after his injury.

Leonard was 6 of 11 passing for 43 yards and one interception before scoring. Angeli led Notre Dame to a field goal before the end of the half, cutting Penn State’s lead to 10-3 at halftime. On Notre Dame’s first drive of the third quarter, Leonard led the team down the field and capped the drive with a TD run of his own to tie the game at 10-10.

After that, things got wild. The two teams combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter as Notre Dame took a 27-24 victory on a 41-yard field goal by Mitch Jeter with eight seconds left.
