It includes presentations from different cultural perspectives and a selection of traditional Thanksgiving dishes from different cultures,” the university said.

According to the school calendar, the University at Buffalo’s Intercultural and Diversity Center also hosted a discussion on Nov. 21 on the topic of “Decolonizing Thanksgiving.”

Students should discuss whether it is “right to celebrate Thanksgiving and America’s history of settler colonialism” and ask, “What can we do to honor this day of mourning for Indigenous communities?” according to the event description.

“We can redefine the meaning of Thanksgiving to remember and respect the history of Indigenous peoples,” it says.

“This is definitely a day of trauma and definitely a day of historical significance for First Nations and Indigenous people,” event organizer Jordyn Orozco told the local outlet. “While Thanksgiving is celebrated by some, the actual day of Thanksgiving, the 28th, is the national day of mourning, a day of remembrance and a day of sorts to honor those who have died and to acknowledge that history has been rewritten to address the trauma eliminate what this community has faced.”
