Colorado Avalanche game preview: Dancing with the New Jersey Devils

The Colorado Avalanche continue their trip to the East with a game on Sunday night against the New Jersey Devils. It will be the team’s third game in four days of travel and will really test the limits and travel options.

After a break last year, the Devils are on track to make the playoffs this season. When these two teams met last season, New Jersey evened things up with a 5-3 win and looked to repeat.

The Avs managed to secure a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings almost 24 hours ago. It was a big win, not only defeating an old rival but also putting important points on the board.

It was also encouraging to see Alexandar Georgiev playing brilliantly in the goal area. He made a handful of brilliant saves and maintained the lead, quite unlike what we’ve seen from him in recent appearances.

With it being the second leg of a back-to-back game, Scott Wedgewood will get the nod tonight and look to repeat the same performance. Will the team ahead of him bounce back to achieve another impressive result?

Projected lines

Artturi Lehkonen (62) – Nathan MacKinnon (29) – Mikko Rantanen (96)
Ross Colton (20) – Casey Mittelstadt (37) – Valeri Nichushkin (13)
Joel Kiviranta (94) – Ivan Ivan (82) – Logan O’Connor (25)
Nikolai Kovalenko (51) – Parker Kelly (17) – Nikita Prishchepov (85)

Devon Toews (7) – Cale Makar (8)
Sam Girard (49) – Sam Malinski (70)
Calvin de Haan (44) – John Ludvig (3)

NOTE: Don’t be surprised if the Avs sub some players for this game just to bring in new players after last night’s game. John Ludvig could fill in for Keaton Middleton, and Nikita Prishchepov could fill in for Chris Wagner, or either or neither of them happens. We won’t know until the team comes out to warm up.

New Jersey Devils

New Jersey has been sidelined since its last game on Friday night. This game ended in a 3-2 final in favor of the Devils over the Seattle Kraken, their second straight win after another big win a few nights earlier at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.

Unlike last season, New Jersey didn’t spend this season in injury hell. They currently sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division, just two points behind the leading Washington Capitals.

Their two standout scorers were Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt, who were on the second row but moved up to the front row tonight. Will they be the ones to contribute to the Devils’ third win in a row?

Projected lines

Ondrej Palat (18) – Jack Hughes (86) – Jesper Bratt (63)
Timo Meier (28) – Nico Hischer (13) – Stefan Noesen (11)
Erik Haula (56) – Dawson Mercer (91) – Tomas Tatar (90)
