Colorado men’s basketball knocks out the UConn Huskies in the Maui Invitational

In a matchup that few expected would be close, Colorado men’s basketball beat the No. 2 UConn Huskies in the Maui Invitational on Tuesday.

Forward Andrej Jakimovski delivered the game-winning basket with about ten seconds left in regulation, sinking an acrobatic layup to give the Buffs the ultimate 73-72 lead. From there, Colorado’s defense held strong against the country’s back-to-back defending champions.

According to Jake Shapiro of Denver Sports, the Buffs had never beaten an AP top-four team outside of Boulder in program history before Tuesday.

Colorado, which improved to 5-1 on the young season, trailed UConn 40-32 at halftime before going on a 14-6 run to start the second half. Point guard Julian Hammond III and center Elijah Malone each scored 16 points, while Jakimovski posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Head coach Tad Boyle and the Buffs next face the winner of Tuesday’s Dayton-Iowa State matchup on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. MT.
