Commanders playoff picture: Washington’s updated odds to reach the 2024 NFL Playoffs in Week 17 against the Falcons

The Commanders are one of the surprise teams in the NFL this year. They enter Week 17 at 10-5 after winning just four games last year.

After beating the Eagles last week, Washington remains alive in the NFC East title game, although it still has a lot of work to do in the final two weeks. Still, the Commanders are in good shape to at least secure a wild card spot and return to the postseason.

As Washington prepares to host the Falcons on Sunday night, here’s a look at where it stands in the NFC playoff picture.

NFC East standings

position team Record
1 Philadelphia Eagles 12-3
2 Washington commanders 10-5
3 Dallas Cowboys 7-8
4 New York Giants 2-13

The Commanders are two games behind the Eagles in the NFC East but are still alive to win a division title. If Washington wins and Philadelphia loses, the Commanders could still win the division on a tiebreaker.

The Cowboys and Giants are out of NFC East and playoff contention, but both teams could still play a role in who wins the division by playing Philadelphia and Washington down the road.

NFC wildcard standings

position team Record
1 Detroit Lions 13-2
2 Philadelphia Eagles 12-3
3 Los Angeles Rams 10-6
4 Atlanta Falcons 8-7
5 Minnesota Vikings 13-2
6 Green Bay Packers 11-4
7 Washington commanders 10-5

The Commanders are ineligible for the No. 5 seed, so the best they can do as a wildcard team is to become the No. 6 seed in the playoffs. Still, the most likely scenario is that the Commanders are the seventh and final team in the NFC playoffs, which could take them on with the Eagles in the first round.

The Commanders will secure a playoff spot with one of the following two results:

Additionally, Washington is eliminated from the NFC East title game with:

  • A loss to the Falcons OR
  • An Eagles win against the Cowboys

Regardless of the results, the Commanders cannot be eliminated from playoff contention this week, nor can they clinch the NFC East title in Week 17. The most likely outcome this season is that the Commanders earn a wild card berth but not the NFC East division title.
