Consequential law in Test cricket: What happens if India fails to score 246 runs against Australia in the third Test?

India find themselves in a difficult situation on day four of the third Test against Australia at GABBA in Brisbane. The visitors need 65 more runs to avoid injury as the score is currently 180/6.

Ravindra Jadeja (52) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (9) were at the gate. If India wants to save the replacement, the two would need to score the majority of those runs to take India to 246.

The rain has returned in Brisbane and the players have returned to the pavilion.

The succession law

India are still 265 runs behind but the total score of 245 runs is on everyone’s lips. The answer lies in the corollary law. According to MCC Law 14.1.1: “In a two-innings match of 5 days or more, the side batting first and leading by at least 200 runs shall have the option to require the other side to follow its innings. “

This means that if India fails to score 246 runs, Australia will have the option to come out to bat again. And if they manage to throw them out with the required runs, they will decide the game by an inning; If not, they will come out to bat again.
Should India manage to save the follow-up match, it would be a big step towards saving the Test match as it would mean that Australia would have to come out to bat in the second innings and India would have to set a target, which would take up more time out. This Test.Follow- on may have fallen out of fashion in the modern game, but in a Test match where time is of the essence, it becomes extremely important.
