“Cosby Show” alum Geoffrey Owens is struggling to make a living

“The Cosby Show” alum Geoffrey Owens said he’s still struggling to “make a living” six years after he went viral for his job at a grocery store.

“I struggle every day to make ends meet,” Owens, 63, said recently on Atlanta radio station V-103, “and people can’t handle it because they see me in movies.”

The actor, best known for portraying Sondra Huxtable’s partner Elvin Tibideaux on the NBC sitcom from 1985 to 1992, noted that he’s “not doing much better” these days than he was when a customer infamously took photos of him at work behind the register at a Trader Joe’s in 2018.

“People have a misconception about what the average middle-class actor earns and how well they can make a living in the industry,” he said.

Owens — a Yale University graduate and son of former New York congressman Major Owens — has continued to act since the end of “The Cosby Show,” but lived largely out of the spotlight until snaps from his side job as a cashier surfaced online.

“Initially there were basically some negative comments about job shaming. A ‘Where is he now?’ kind of thing,” he said during the radio interview. “But then, very soon after, there was all this support and encouragement from around the world.”

Geoffrey eventually left his post at Trader Joe’s because he feared the viral moment would invade his privacy.

“It was strange because someone was in the store taking photos,” he shared. “And I thought, now that this whole thing is out, I’m not going to feel comfortable working in this store and wondering who’s there with a camera. It would just be too strange. I’m a very private person.”

He continued: “It wasn’t like I gave up because I knew I was going to make a lot of money soon or anything. I just felt like I couldn’t withstand that kind of control and attacks on my privacy.”

The TV star also noted that the series was pulled from syndication and Geoffrey’s leftovers suddenly “disappeared” after dozens of women accused “Cosby Show” star Bill Cosby of sexual assault.

After he made headlines with his appearance at the supermarket, several people came forward and offered him financial help.

Nicki Minaj even sent Geoffrey $25,000, but he donated the money to a charity because he said it “didn’t feel right keeping it” without earning it.

He took acting jobs for several projects, including a role in Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and the Have Nots” and the 50 Cent shows “Power” and “Power Book II: Ghost.”

Geoffrey currently stars in the CBS show Poppa’s House, which also stars Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. He also appears in the new film “Mr. Santa Claus: A Christmas Extravaganza.”

Despite his return to Hollywood, Geoffrey said he returned to his job at Trader Joe’s because he still wasn’t making enough money to make a comfortable living from acting alone.
