Costco Shoppers Angry Over Big Change in Popular Baking Items

Costco loyalists have been known to rave about everything from the food court (with its decades-long $1.50 hot dog offering) to the chain’s assortment of exclusive, high-quality Kirkland Signature brand grocery products to cheap Alcohol. So if the company makes a change, people will definitely notice it. And in the case of a revised baked product, it goes without saying that the change will not be accepted by customers.

That’s why a Costco shopper put the big retailer on blast in a Reddit post this week after noticing a sign at a Southern California location that said the $9.99 six-packs come with “Mix and Match muffins would be replaced by individual muffins. Flavors in an eight-pack for $6.99. Now you don’t have to be a mathematician to calculate that the new muffins are significantly more expensive.

However, one user broke it down and calculated that the old muffins were $4.99 for a 35-ounce six-pack and that the new muffins were $6.99 for a 31-ounce eight-pack, meaning that the new ones are 58 percent more expensive. In addition, the new muffins are also smaller, with another user estimating that they are about 70 percent the size of the old ones.

To make matters worse, apparently the recipe has also changed. And although some users theorize that they are now made with better ingredients like real butter instead of vegetable oil, the general consensus is that the old muffins were a far better product.

“One of my best friends is a baker at Costco and she told me she’s preparing for a lot of angry customers,” one user wrote. “The recipes will be completely different, not just the size will change.” Another user agreed that they had been “promised” by the bakery staff that the new muffins would be a better product, adding succinctly: “I agree “Not too.”

“The new chocolate muffins are GARBAGE,” seethed another customer. “We got them for a ‘fun’ breakfast for our kids and our entire kitchen floor was covered in chocolate muffin crumbs. They are super dry and crumbly. RIP to the most amazing chocolate muffin.”

“This is much worse,” another shopper complained. “They are much drier, have less flavor, and are just boring and crumbly. I’m shocked they changed the muffins because that’s what they’re pretty well known for. I won’t buy them again.”

It seems unlikely that Costco will lose customers on muffins alone, but with membership fees rising for the first time in seven years, it could be enough to deter some budget-conscious shoppers.
