New York Giants coach Brian Daboll was asked Monday for his assessment of Atlanta Falcons rookie quarterback Michael Penix ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.

“He is a very productive player. He could throw it at all three levels. Very accurate. Obviously he had a lot of good players around him. But I thought he really gave those guys opportunities down the stretch. “Intermediate throws, we threw the ball effortlessly,” Daboll said. “It was sporty. I wouldn’t say they used him on a lot of runs, but more of a drop-back and play-action guy. But quite athletic enough to do different things. Met him, had a good meeting. Clever. Instinctively. I thought he had a pretty good pro day, I was at his pro day. So I thought he would be a good candidate.”

The Giants had the No. 6 overall pick. Of course, they waived Penix as well as quarterbacks JJ McCarthy and Bo Nix. The Falcons took Penix at No. 8.

There’s a chance Daboll and the Giants can get a firsthand look at what they’ve accomplished Sunday against the Falcons. After Atlanta narrowly defeated the 2-12 Las Vegas Raiders 15-9 on Monday night, Falcons coach Raheem Morris opened the door for Penix’s first NFL start this weekend.

Veteran starting quarterback Kirk Cousins ​​has struggled with nine interceptions and just one touchdown pass in the last five games. Atlanta had lost four straight before picking up a win against Las Vegas on Monday.

“He (Cousins) has to play better,” Morris said. “He wants to play better. We have to find a way to make him play better. We’ll get to work tomorrow. We have to play better at the quarterback position.”

Penix appeared in just two games and completed three of five passes.

The Giants could start their fourth quarterback of the season on Sunday. After waiving Daniel Jones, the Giants suffered injuries to both Drew Lock (heel) and Tommy DeVito (concussion).

That could lead to Tim Boyle starting against Atlanta. That would highlight the current hopelessness of the Giants’ quarterback situation, as opposed to the hope that a young player like Penix could give the Falcons.
